The most valuable assets of organizations are its employees, who work in close co-ordination towards the achievement of the respective objectives of those organizations. Organizational behavior theory relates to the amalgamation of the summarized and filtered results of research done by experts in the field of business management in understanding the work situational actions and reactions of employees who work for organizations.

To understand organizational behavior theory is not as simple as it seems. In order to grasp it properly, you as a manager or leader require to devote time to study it as well as training. However, a basic understanding of the factors that affect the actions and reactions of employees will help produce effective and better business leaders.

 

Individuals, groups of people, and structure of organizations determine the effectiveness of an organization. The behavior of people in an organization is primarily responsible for its growth and progress. Therefore, knowledge of the basic organizational behavior theories that pertain to main issues such as motivation, leadership, and power is necessary.

There are various theories of motivation, and some of them are Maslow's theory of motivation, Alderfer's theory of motivation, Herzberg's theory of motivation, and the expectancy theory of motivation. All these theories of motivation aim to bring about changes in employees behaviors so as to optimize organizational performance.

Maslow's theory of motivation basically emphasizes on meeting the physiological needs, safety needs, social needs, esteem needs, and self-actualization needs of employees. This may be achieved through provision of job security, rest breaks, and provision of team-based projects.

Now let us take a look at leadership theories. The famous theories on leadership in the context of organizational behavior are Mcgregors theory X and theory Y and Houses Path-Goal theory. Every new theory that derives from a previous model increases our understanding of leadership.

Organizational behavior theory illustrates that understanding the thinking and feeling of employees helps managers to select the most appropriate leadership qualities and motivation strategies. This helps to set schedules and plans and distribution of work according to an employees capacity and increased productivity for the company.

Other important components of organizational behavioral theory include communications in the organization, the dynamics of individuals who work there, the overall satisfaction of employees, managers, and owners.

Proper understanding of organizational behavioral theory will take time and dedication, but it will definitely bring fruitful results and increased satisfaction for all concerned in organizations.
